So I am trying to calculate the LAI of sorghum, but I only have the leaf area. The missing piece is the area of ground/m2.
Additionally, I have the planting density, plant spacing, and row spacing. But I am not sure if it is possible without this critical piece. Any advice or tips would be super helpful.

If you have total leaf area per plant, and a value for plants per area (plants per meter-squared for example), you can just multiply. For example:
(m2 of leaf area/plant)*(number of plants/m2 of ground area)
=(m2 of leaf/m2 of ground area)
If you want the LAI of one plant, then you need to measure how much ground area one plant covers, and that would be your area for the denominator.

S=0.75 * a * b,
a - length, b - width.
2. Determine the average area of a single sheet (Sx) by the formula:
Sx= ∑Si/N,
Si - area of individual leaves, cm2;
N - number of leaves.
3. The method of contour prints on graph paper, according to the formula 2.
4. Determination of leaf surface index.
Calculate the index of the leaf surface (ILS) as the ratio of the area of the leaves of plants to the surface area of the soil on which they grow according to the formula 3:
ILS = (Smean * n * k) / (M * 10000),
Smean - average area of one sheet, cm2;
n - the total number of leaves from all plants of the sample, pieces;
k - - number of plants per square meter, pcs. (reference: cereals 500, leguminous 200, potatoes 5, sugar beet 10);
M - the number of plants in the sample, pieces.
