I have seen research papers that propose the method to calculate guided wave transmission/reflection coefficients by dividing the amplitude at the center frequency of the receiving signal spectrum by that of the excitation spectrum. My question is that is there any windowing applied before such a division? In other words, do the scattered or reflected wave-packets need to be isolated first? If so, what kind of windows are commonly used?

We did not applied a window but rather use the coherence function to determine the valid range of frequency in our test. We applied the technique to a soil column but the methodology is applicable to other systems/materials as well. See attached paper

Hi Xin ! This is a tipical frequency-analysis problem! In general, the window depends on your aim. Consider that the rectangular window has a good resolution in frequency but a very high leackage of energy. DIfferent types of window (i.e. top flat) has a low frequency resolution but the leackage is contained. It could be usefull to start working with a good compromise for example a Hanning Window.
