I am working with a household survey and have both a person and a household file. I am using the household file for the main part of my analysis but want to explore the household characteristics a bit further. Specifically, I want to see if the ethnicity of the household head generally corresponds to the majority ethnicity of the household members. I have a unique identifier (at the household level) which allows me to both merge the two files and determine whether respondents are part of the same households. I want to determine the ethnicity by using the mode (within the household identifier) and then compare this to the household head response. Does anyone know how to do this in SPSS?

If you can put what you want in form of research questions, it will be easy to assist you.
It's a little difficult without knowing how your data is organised and what you want to happen in special cases (like missing values, mixed ethnicities, an equal number of people in two categories, etc.)
But the basic idea of what you want is pretty easy to do in SPSS by using If statements:
if ethmode = person1 ethcompare = 0.
if ethmode ~= person1 ethcompare = 1.
If you don't already have a variable for the household ethnicity mode you can create one like this (again this is a simplified version because I don't know the details of your data):
COUNT var0=person1, person2, person3, person4(0).
COUNT var1=person1, person2, person3, person4(1).
COUNT var2=person1, person2, person3, person4(2).
if var0 > var1 & var0 > var2 ethmode = 0.
if var0 < var1 & var1 > var2 ethmode = 1.
if var0 > var1 & var0 < var2 ethmode = 2.
