How Glow Discharge Spectroscopy can be used to characterize surface oxide films formed in hot rolling? What are its detection limits for various elements? Can it detect low atomic weight elements accurately? And what is depth, up to which it considers upper part as a surface?
Hi in principle GDOES is perfect for your problem: With GDOES you may detect any element (including H, C, O, N, ...) and of course also the heavier elements (metals) down to below say 0.5 at. %. It is however destructive, you need to sputter your sample. Depending on the sputter rate, the depth that you are able to investigate is in a way limited. But films of some few nm thickness are no problem to investigate, and also thicker films of up to several 100 nm can be measured.
