Hello, I'm an environmental engineering student from Indonesia. I get question from my assignment presentation. The question is, how can BAF or biofilm or biofilter technology be used in drinking water treatment? even though the technique can be dangerous because it involves bacteria. Indeed, many journals use this technique in the drinking water treatment process, but they don't explain in detail how the water is safe after biological filtering. Maybe someone can help me to answer it. Thanks.
It is a fact that drinking water treatment can apply biological filtration and there is no problems with these bacteria for humans.
In Denmark we apply biological sand filtration for >99% of our waterworks. There generally is no chlorination or other disinfections applied after the filtering. A low concentration of bacteria adapted to biodegrade organic matter at low temperatures are not harmful.

Biological processes have the potential to remove pollutants that may be ineffectively removed by conventional treatment, such as biodegradable organics, synthetic organic compounds, ammonia, nitrate, iron, and manganese. The Bacteria feed organic source like molasses are used. The raw water collected in SBR(Sequential Bio Reactors) with feed in of molasses for bacteria feed.The settle heavy material removed and above part decanterd.
