In my case, there are some studies that my team and I need to collect data monthly in situ for laboratory analysis (major ions and stable isotopes), such as rainwater, surface water, and groundwater samples for a hydrological cycle that started last November here in southeastern Brazil. Let's share some ideas and experiences about that situation. :)
We're continuing our weekly fieldwork. Plants can't wait for quarantine to pass, so monitoring has to continue. Here in Germany we have the privilege to still be able to do such things and we're working hard on getting permits for traveling further distances... Good luck
I wanted to go last week with graduate students for a few days of fieldwork in the NE Hindu Kush area of Pakistan. I was stopped from proceeding because of fear of contracting the corona virus in guest houses/ hotels where we planned to stay.
The area would get too hot in the end of May.
The institution that manages the money from my project is no longer allowing/releasing funding for fieldwork during the quarantine. The laboratory and university that run the samples are also closed. So we are now unable to do anything during this period.
At my lab, the following suggestions have been disseminated: All non-essential travel is banned. Avoid going unless the trip is essential. You must maintain a safe distance between you and lab partners (not sure how many of you work simultaneously in Brazil. Our fieldwork requires a team of two people). Avoid traveling in the same vehicle, unless you know that you are both (all) safe. Do not stay overnight at public places (hotels/AirBnB...). Bring your own meals. Wash hands frequently.
Lock down is still on in our country(India). There is no possibility of proceeding to remote areas for field work till there is a declaration and permission from the govt . Usually we prefer field work in winter as summer is too hot here. So no field work now.
We are working on analysis part and will resume fieldwork as usual in winter. Paulo Galvão
Yes, Itishree Padhi. We also here take advantage of no field works for writing papers based on data base of previous works.
The academic institutions are closed. I was asked to postpone fieldwork over a month ago. So am spending time on computer. Thanks to Research Gate.
But there are some monthly fieldworks that are affected (e.g. hydrological studies collecting data during a hydrological cycle).
In my case, as a retired and amateur man I would not call it fieldwork but roomwork. In these days of quarantine I have started three manuscripts, and I have already submitted one of them, perhaps this quarantine will be short ... My conclusion? like many of you I guess, write and finish started projects! Be careful all of you.
