E-Journal Subscription from Primary Publisher V/s E-journals in aggregators
How are we to deal with subscription of E-Journals for consortia or for large groups of library? We would like to know the key points/ guideline of E-Journal Subscription from Primary Publisher V/s E-journals subscription form aggregators.
Consortium subscription of e-journals is done mainly by 'big deal'. Big deal is a new business model through which libraries purchase electronic access to a publisher’s entire papers rather than subscribing selected titles. You have to do a need analysis first by dealing with the libraries which are going to be member/s of the consortia. Consortia member librarians should take responsible for the resources they want. After defining the needs of libraries you have to call for quotation from the suppliers that have resources to match your needs. It's a long process as it matters huge amount of money and requires bargaining. Usually a consortia committee can work for a successful resource subscription.

You may go for pick and choose model as per your requirement and negotiate with publishers.
Sometimes publishers provide access to the entire range of electronic journals and other publications bundled into one (e.g. ACM DigitalLibrary). Access to individual titles is not permissible.
Coupled with print: In most of the cases access to electronic version is tied to the
subscription of the print journal. It may be either free with the print subscription (e.g.
ASCE) or priced at a fixed percentage of the print subscription (e.g. IEEE package).
Many publishers have started offering electronic versions of their journals almost at
the same price as that of the print.
The drawback of big deal is that there is no option of selecting the titles so a substantial portion of such collection may not be of any use for the library
e.g. Subscription of ScienceDirect from Elsevier.

I agree that selecting specific titles is not possible in big deal. While amalgamating the requirements of all universities the list of titles would be very longer. In that case big deal is the good option. In addition access to back issues also possible and the search for a specific key word will retrieve scholarly papers from the database, not from a singe journal.
If we consider Science direct, it has several subject collections. For example, Basic Sciences, Social Sciences, Life Science and Medicine, Engineering etc. Accordiing to the requirement of the member libraries modules can be selected and go for bargaining the subscription cost.
