How are the silane solution stabilised?

Dear all,

we know that silanes are prone to hydrolysis, hence if one wish to store a silane solution say 2% , how can we acheive this. I guess that we must have a properly dry solvent free from moisture.Additionally, adding some anti microbial agent, a UV absorbent will help. Kindly help

You are correct. Silanes (more specifically alkoxysilanes) are stable in dry aprotic solvents such as toluene. They are also stable in dry alcohol sol'ns but to avoid transesterification the alcohol should be the same as the alkoxy subsequent (e.g. ethanol for an ethoxysilanes). On the other hand small amounts of water can facilitate surface modification. See the attached.
