How are L-DOPA tablets prepared, by using plant extracts or by chemical process?

If chemical process what are its disadvantages. If a plant system(in-vitro) is produced with high L-DOPA content how feasible will it be to use them? Will it be really helpful for the pharmacy companies to utilize this L-DOPA when compared to chemical process?
