MY mother was everyting for me. If she were not, I woud not be along. She gaves me all love and was always taking care of me. Unfortunately, she already died. I missed her very much.

Well, my expectation is very high to hear something good about the MOTHER to whom all of us should express appreciation and gratefulness. I would like to hear/know any scholarly study that focuses on mother from any perspective (anthropology, folklore, sociology, psychology, feminism, women's movements, matriarchal/patriarchal orientations and so like). Thank you.

I'm still speculating about the significance of the concept of mother. For example, there is a very important social role ascribed to the "mother" in Arab or Middle Eastern countries. When a woman delivers a baby (say a boy whose name is Ali), she is called informally or socially um Ali (mother of Ali). The father is also called Abu Ali (father of Ali). This is considered a social transformation of personality of a woman being dealt as an honorable mother. Such a social categorization does not exist in Western countries ( I never heard a woman is called "mother of John" or "mother of Donald", for example). Think about it. Do you have another nice story?

In the West El-Sayed people are seen as functioning individually not fitting into a stereotype. So a woman might be a mother but would be equally defined as within a profession, possessing certain characteristics, and personality. Living in traditional Eastern societies, as I have, I found women often morphed one into another. There was little if any distinction. A mother effected the archetypes of what there a mother was considered to be. Personality was expressed within certain tropes.

Nevertheless, using son of or its female equivalent, is common in some northern European countries such as Gunnarson/son of Gunnar. This usually indicates a patriachal or clan framework.

Thank you Stanley for your participation. First of all, I'm not sure about the use of the term "stereotype". Yes, individuality is a common feature of Western people, Europe and he US, but the mother is still recognized as a core factor in the family there. Single mothers (with no husbands) are accepted in the West. When I discussed the case of mother in the Middle East (Arab world) with example of umAli (mother of Ali), I indicated a positive (locally accepted) social transformation of women, not because getting married but because the children they bring to the family. Unlike married women in the West who prefer to adopt their husbands' maiden names, Arab women keep their own maiden names.

I think it depends on the culture of the country. We have a lot of intercultural differences and similarities with different countries. In my view, the concept of mother is so respectful in all around the globe. If they are not similar to us it does not mean that mother is not well respected in the west and European countries. I think these misrepresentations arise from the concept of dependability. In Arab nations, Iran and all Muslim countries, families are too dependent to one another in terms of emotional relationships. Although in the west families grow up their children so independent.

A mother is someone who can take the places of all others but whose place no one else can take. In regard to James Faust, the infulence of mother in the lives of her children is beyond calculation. If you conduct a

cosmopolitan research over this issue, you will understand that thses points are true in all around the world.

Dear El-Sayed El-Aswad, such maxims emanate from universal human values; so undoubtedly, they have great bearing on the generations to come irrespective of time and space/place.

The following story may interest the followers of this question. I was talking to an Indian physician about the concept of motherhood. He gave a very interesting example of the significance of that concept. He said that when his daughter showed that she was pregnant he changed his view about her from a dear daughter to a sacred or divine mother. He emotionally expressed how he was blessed to have a mother (his pregnant daughter/potential mother) after losing his own mother. Such an example powerfully reflects the eminent place the mother enjoys in the Indian culture (as is case in other cultures).

These lines are wonderful and metaphorical. I agree with these lines because mother = Nature = Prakriti (Sanskrit) , all is feminine and care is always preserved and prosperous of mother or nature. If we neglect this then the whole system (family or society) will be collapsed. So, we need to take care of our mother. This is holy.
