Image differencing is an effective technique to study change detection. Good luck.

The best choice is to create ROIs for classes in each image. If you choose common from one image representative for both images then your classification may end up wrong especially if the class (es) changed in one of these images.

The post classification approach which is the comparative analysis of independently produced classifications for different dates (Alagu Raja et al., 2013).
