I've recently done an RNA extraction from mouse liver progenitor cells- on running my RNA samples on a gel, I noticed a distinct band above the 28S. Any ideas on what it may be? I don't think it's genomic contamination as it isn't smeared and isn't large enough but I'm new to RNA extractions.

Yes, i also think it is DNA, why dont you think is genomic contamination?? Did you use DNAse treatment? Perhaps it did not worked well.
I agree with David.
You should try effective denaturing conditions to resolve the migration of your RNA. I also agree with David's considerations about genomic DNA (it looks different from what is seen in your samples).
Another hint: you should acquire the image before over-saturating pixels... this could help in understanding if the triple bands are (or not) dependent on quantity of loaded samples.
Anyway, being more than a few times the RNA pattern on gel cell-type specific, you cannot totally exclude the hypotesis of specific secondary RNA structures (...so, denaturing is the answer... ;)
