I need some help to calculate a fault distance in a H.V transmission line. I used a simulink(Matlab) model with a programing code for a simple transmission line with 2 sources.
The result simulation gives me an error in fault distance value. I can send a code and the model. Please some helps.

Hello, First of all you have to create the fault at each instance of transmission line and collect the sample data for all the cases. After that you can extract post fault data and create the input file and according to the input file you have to assign the target value and feed both file to the ANN.

Thera are some steps to follow to detect de pont of fault with some algorithm:
1. TYpe of fault: three phase, single phase to ground, phase to phase fault, double phase to ground, these are typical in fault analysis
2. The distance to fault point could be estimated with the circuit model. This model depends on the impedances of the line.
3. The impedance of the line are function of geometrical arrangement of conductor, the groun wire or guard wire, and on the resistivity of the soil beneath the line..
4. For three phase and phase to phase faults the impedances of the line , if full transposition is assumed, are independt of the ground wire and resistivity of the soil.
5. Faults that involve ground, requiere the knowledge of the resitivity of the soil in order to model the line impedances involved in the circuit model. The presence of ground wire affects the impedances of the line for circuit model of line under faults involved with ground.
6. Impedance Model for single line are differents of model por double line on the same tower, due to tne mutual effect between both circuits. For unbalance faults, this mutual effect affects the fault location calculation.
So, if the line is not properly modeled , the results with any algoritm are not reliable.
My recommendation go deep into line circuital model, before to explore any algorithm to detect point fault. I do not recomend to use software with model of lines included, because you should know what model are using por fault calculation, in order to have control of the external variables that affect the circuital model of the inpedances of the line.
By using sequence current and voltage, we can identify that the fault is line to line or line to ground.
- By calculating impedance of transmission lines, we are able to know the fault zone .
But the numerical relays (microprocessors relay) identify the fault location and types of fault based on the voltage and current pattern.
