Hi! I would like to do dissolution of an Al foil electrode to a non-aqeuous solution of LiBH4. Do you have any recommendations what to do?

I wanted to oxidize Al foil electrode into a non-aqeuous solution of LiBH4. I used Al foil as working electrode but I never see any signs of Al oxidation nor change of mass (initial and final electrolysis) from the foil after I try to do electrolysis at its oxidation potential. What could be the reasons for this?

Hello,

Yes, in non-aqueous you are probably having a stable oxide layer. Also, perhaps you will oxidize the BH4- first, or if your form Al3+ it instantly gets reduced by the BH4 back to Al(0). Once all the BH4- is gone, then you may be able to oxidize the Al. Can you do it without the borohydride in there and compare?
