Here is a simple advice:

Don't.

The additional effort you have to go through to make sure that your results are valid is not worth the save in computer time.

These controls are there for special cases (like a very large structure with a very small region under load, where the usual averaging is problematic). Unless you have a case like this, it is probably best not to use these controls (you can of course change the controls for the newton methd etc that do not affect solution precision, as raafat suggests). If you have a case like this (may happen in a problem with cracks), be aware that the residuals are forces and thus depend on the mesh density.
