Usually 3T3-L1 cell line is used as model to study white adipocyte differentiation. But as we know there are different white adipose tissues based on their location.Based on our data there seems be different molecular mechanisms for different local adipose differentiation.My question is that 3T3-l1 represents visceral or subcutaneous adipocyte or it a mixture population.

I've experience working in adipogenesis with 3t3-L1 and primary cultures of preadipocytes from visceral and subcutaneous depots, and they are quite different between them (especially in protein expression and secretion).
In my opinion, 3T3-L1 is a good model for studies in general adipogenesis, but if you want to go further and try to study adipocytes from a specific location, I recommend you to go directly to primary cultures. If you have easy access to adipose tissue, isolate and keep them in culture is quite an easy technique.
