If you have photos, I will have a look. I have seen a lot of specimens in the Meunier collection in Göttingen and have some experience in determination. However, my main interest is the possible phylogeny of the family and thus the 'old' specimens are of greater interest. Concerning Burmese Amber morphology of most subfamilies is very similar to what we find today. So the time before (although the biotopes maybe different) is of major interest.

Dear Rüdiger, I think several Psychodidae have been described in Spanish amber but I have not a clear idea because I'm palaeobotanist. you should contact with the palaeoentomologists Enrique Peñalver ([email protected]). He will answer your questions about insects.

I do not really know fossil flies but I have to take a look at my collection of amber. Small flies are commonly included... but often destroyed in order to better observe other inclusions :-((((

thanks for your answer and the photo. The photo shows a related species to extant Sciaroidea - quite nice. My interest (and qualification) is Psychodidae, a family of lower Diptera (Nematocera). Within Psychodidae several subfamilies exist that appear quite different. A good feature is the large number of longitudinal veins in wing with almost no crossveis - wing elongate to ovoid. I append some photos of material from different ambers that may help to identify the family. Usually Psychodidae are not very but quite abundant ....

Sorry for the misunderstanding: the shape of the cubitus branch deceived me.

This specimen was preserved in Malagasy copal. The wings seems to have a similar pointed shape. Another wrong fellow?

Hi Francesco,

this is seemingly a female Phlebotome fly (one of the subfamilies of Psychodidae). Wing shape, wing veins antenna and biting mouthparts are characteristics of these beasts. Other subfamiles have wing of more oval shape.
