We are measuring the ash Content of different feedstocks for biomass use such as sewerage sludge, Wood Chips etc. In some of our tests, we realized that the ash content of sample increases as we use muffle furnace to ignite volatile solids to determine the real amount of ash Content. We are following the procedure according to ASTM E 1755 (Standard Test Method for Ash in Biomass).
The question is "What can cause it?"

The mineral content of any sample can’t vary (increase or decrease), because the organic fraction doesn’t vary in the same sample. You have to worry about cleaning the muffle furnace and the incineration containers as this may cause errors in the analysis. Reduction due to wear of the incineration containers is more common, especially if they are made of porcelain.

Thank you bıllion tımes. It occurs just for a specific sample (leather residue). The containers are porcelain. I will try again in the morning but the main problem seems to be related to the chemical composition of the biomass. Do you think that It can be related to the chemical composition of digestate leather? (As it reacts wıth other samples or something like that)

The problem is only with the biochar of leather residue feedstock. I followed your advises but still gained mass. So I think that there is a metal oxide reaction take place in the muffle furnace. Now the question is what kind of reaction can take place? :) Thank you very much for your all answers.

You can also try to determine the ash content from proximate analysis using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It is considered a reliable method for proximate analysis.
