Most research talks about the lead up to the start of school, the start of school and the time after the start of school, as being part of the transition. Many papers about the transition to school do not actually define the transition to school. I am looking for a very specific definition if anyone has come across one I would be most grateful if you could share or point me in the right direction. TIA. Rebecca.

I am not entirely sure what you mean by "transition to school timeline".
UNESCO regards transition as one of the indicators of progression (together with repeaters, survival rates, etc.). The UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) allows you to browse their data bases on several search fields.
Follow the link http://uis.unesco.org/
and under "Explore Themes" select "Education & Literacy", and "View Indicators".
I have noticed that they have reworked their website and not everything does seem to work very smoothly - a little patience might be needed.
You may also find useful the UIS Technical Guidelines on Education Indicators, which I attach..
