I have a dataset of progeny tests. The data were collected on hybrid individuals evaluated in field trials. They are hybrids between 2 unrelated cross-pollinated populations A and B.

I analyse the data with a mixed model similar to a "sire and dam" model (ie y = µ + parent_A + parent_B + parent_A*parent_B + e). With this model, I obtain 2 estimates of additive variances, ie one for each parental population. From that, I can get one narrow-sense heritability for each population, h²A and h²B.

As h is the correlation between the breeding value and the phenotypic value, I have some doubts about the meaning of hA and hB, because the parents of the progeny tests do not have phenotypic values.

So, is hA the correlation between the breeding value of the A parents and the phenotypic value they would have had if they had been evaluated in the same experimental design?

Thanks
