cyperus rotundus are problematic weeds in fields and house gardens. It is quit difficult to eliminate it by pulling in gardens usually which could cause breakage of roots, leaving tubers in the soil from which new plants emerge quickly.
Indeed, C. rotundus is a very difficult weed to eliminate. In Argentina, the use of natural enemies of this plant has not been reported, which is also very resistant to herbicides. It's a hard problem to solve here, in the rice fields.
The use of natural enemies can be a solution but there can other implications to the soil composition like fertility, as natural enemies can also invade the other soil nutrients e.g. The timbers left behind can use other organic components thus promoting the growth of other undesirable vectors.
Many thanks to JJ Neiff, Zakhe Mcunu and Loekas - Soesanto for interesting reply and quick response. I Agree with Dr. Neiff that the Cyperus rotundus is very resistant to herbicides and no natural enemies of this plant has been reported. but I did refer definitely to the beneficial fungi, possibly not stimulating the growth of further unwanted vectors as Dr. Zakhe Mcunu mentioned. I hope that Dr. Loekas - Soesanto can let me know about any progress in this area. Thanks again to all of you.
