Recently, I have been working with heavy metals. I have studied some research papers regarding "heavy metal toxicity load" calculations where researchers calculated "HMTL" and suggested percentages of toxic metal removal to reduce pollution load in their conclusion. I am a bit confused by these calculations. Could someone please share the exact computation with me?
I would like to contribute to the discussion of the heavy metals toxicity, by including the environmental perspective of loads & concentrations. Biota - both fauna and flora - as well as humans react to heavy metals. It is relevant for the discussion not just the heavy metals load but also the concentration, the exposure type and duration. As an example: I work with heavy metals in stormwater. Very high concentrations discharged to, e.g., rivers can have a direct acute impact and cause fish mortality (the exposure may be of minutes). On the other hand, very small heavy metal loads discharged over time, will not have immediate effects on the biota. Nevertheless, it may have a significant cumulative impact on fish and other biota that may be perceived in some years.
