I was reading Mark Twain's essays and just finished reading What is Man? This essay is dated 1906 and is in the format of a conversation between an old man and a young man. The old man uses logic and examples to convince the young man that the brain works like a machine and that man's behavior, including what appears to be self-sacrifice is in reality, behavior directed for man's perceived self-interest. He also discusses a reasonable conclusion that animals, including insects can make inferences based on observations and direct their behavior accordingly. This essay along with other biological readings, such as The Selfish Gene, by Richard Dawkins, might provoke some interesting discussions among students.
