I am currently involved in working with a team of researchers facilitating organizational change for a rural school district wishing to incorporate global collaboration in their classrooms. We are working with 16 teachers in a coaching model as they develop projects ranging from global awareness to direct collaboration with classrooms in another country. Any experience with working directly with another school would greatly be appreciated.

You may want to contact Otto Scharmer or Adam Yukelson at MIT. Their EdX U.lab course has yielded them some insights in setting up a classroom 2.0 experience. the course ran jan-march 2015, so insights are very recent and have not been published scientifically

For more traditional cooperation: TU Delft (Netherlands) used to have a "traveling circus" on petroleum engineering that physically travelled to 4 locations worldwide in a year. It did involve physical travel.
Same TU Delft and Leiden University (30km apart) have joint courses Molecular Science and Technology. It used to be solved by having the students travel, but they have given virtual presence some thought over the last 15 years as well
