Can anyone help with an identification/interpretation of this specimen?

This sample (15 cm across) was found in the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary interval in western Alberta, Canada, in a series of coal measures with evidence of minor marine influence in some parts. It is intended for a museum display in Canmore, and and Ben Gadd (and many others here) would like to know what it is. Currently there is a wide range of suggestions. Thank you, Terry Poulton
