There are few studies in Nepal but not exactly a scientific ones..they are mostly observational. Obstetric violence is common here.

Dear Judy, I agree completely with you. Homebirth is safer than Planned Hospital Birth but our politicians here in Spain don't think so, and thus a big part of our society. What I really want to know is what  is happening with obstetrics violence in other countries.

Obstetric violence is a by product of the impersonal nature of hospital birth. Focusing on obstetric violence is missing the point.  I recommend that you make the leap to empower yourself one step further. I suggest you ignore the ignorance of people who promote the myth that hospital birth is safe for low risk birth compared to homebirth.

Focus on the real issue and fight for it and dont expect it to be easy or served to you on a platter.  There are private homebirth midwives in Spain. Promote them, bring them to the foreground.  Interview them in the media.  Dont emphasize anything about hospital birth, such as obstetric violence because it wont help you empower women.  It wont help women.  Focus on making homebirth available to women, one woman at a time.  Judy

I think the obstetric violence is a process that involves more aspects: before pregnancy (the medicalization of desire and interventions to achieve a pregnancy), abortion, pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding (the inability of health professionals to address and meet women, without previous judgment, difficulties, cracked with pain, mastitis ...) and parenting. I think menstruation, menopause too ... and especially not just think excessive medicalization, but the lack of attention, lack of training, lack of care. Not only excessive interventionism, but also the omission of assistance. I'm working on this idea, ie, violence nullifies the ontological character, identity, the story of a woman, has to do with the representations that determine a way of life motherhood, understand it, transmit it.

Obstetric violence is part of the culture of possession and abuse of power, the impost of gender roles too.

Hello! I'm activist against violence obstetric in Brazil and researcher about reproductive health, activist, abortion, humanized birth, obstetric violence, unnecesarian and obstetric assistance model.

I've founded in 2013 Artemis NGO that have been a strong actor on changing the obstetric assistance on Brazil. We have visiting all country talking about the issue, we've written a federal law that will be voted in this year and we are promoting discussions on media and in hundreds of cities. Parallel to this we are engaged in develop a documentary film to sensibilize more and more people about the problem.

I would really be happy to talk about the theme and exchange experiences with you. We are focused in 2015 in open the discussion to other countries. Nowadays only Brazil, Venezuela, Argentina and Mexico are acting against this kind of violence with the dedication that it requires.

I co-founded the BeTr Foundation with Deb after she endured obstetric violence during childbirth. We use Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR) to resolve the trauma and the testimony that comes from revisiting the memories to build a database of evidence. We use clinical questionnaires to support the testimonies and to shine light into this dark professional shadow. With so few studies in the literature we've decided to do our own. Collaboration with other activists would be welcome.

I witnessed obstetric violence when my wife became a victim of it.

I am trying to do some research into in as I hadn't actually realised that obstetric medicine had gone to such absurdity.

I agree with the previous comments but I think when a midwife doesn't want midwifery led maternity care as her model of practice and prefer medicalized birth practice, she faces two different paradigm that unfortunately policies and societies prefer medicalized maternity care too,so we,all midwives , should emphasize on maternal mental health well being and design our goals towards reaching safe womanhood instead of safe motherhood

I am a Midwifery lecturer and my country, South Africa, has a very high incidence of obstetric violence in the public health sector. The culture of speaking up on the part of women during antenatal care and labour is almost non-existent I find this topic to be very interesting and my next goal is to do some research on it..
