Has anyone worked on the relationship between mineral composition and landsliding pattern?
I have not worked out the relationship between mineral composition. But, there are weak porous rocks like Rhyolite, Sandstone, Limestone and Basalt.
I have surveyed 25 landslides in the Garhwal Himalaya (India) and processed the sediment sample using XRD - Powder method. The analyzed mineral composition of slope materials does not show any relationship with landsliding pattern in the area. Meanwhile, it was directly influence rock mass strength of the lithological formations analyzed.
Yes, very true ; I am also analyzing it with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to understand the diagenetic changes and depositional processes prevailed in the area.
Two principal components play a role in the relation between mineral composition (of rocks and soil) and the landslide patterns. These are:
1. The content of silica and mica
2. Th heterogeneity of minerals in rock r soil body.
Land slides do take place in many rock types. So it is the physical property than the mineralogical composition is of any concern.
Yes Anja, I have also investigated the micro-surface texture of quartz grains using scanning electron microscopy of all the selected landslides. Meanwhile, it is somehow related with types of failure such as debris fall and debris flow sediments has varying grain size and shape.
Ana, we are investigating sedimentary as well metamorphic rocks of the Himalayas, every mineral has different x-ray spectra, which can be used to identify the types of mineral combination present in the sediment and up to certain extent crystalline structures. There is limitation of spectral library too, which further limit the identification of trace minerals. And, we don't have data on frenetic levels.....
A hetrogeneous geomaterial composed of mixture of minerals, have different hardness.
During the landslide, the weak minerals tend to shear earlier than hard mineral.
