We have a bunch of Methanol d-1 in our NMR solvents supply, but the formula is CD3OH which means that there is a very large peak from the -OH proton. This makes it very hard to see any other peaks of interest and overall spectrum quality is not very good.
Can we use this solvent in our NMR or am I wasting my time?

Just try the solvent for NMR recording of one known compound and check whether large -OH is appearing or large or not.
Methanol-d1 is CH2D-OH so you should also get a huge CH2 signal (as well as a OH). Not really a suitable solvent for NMR unless your sample is very concentrated. At least you should get a lock signal.
Something to watch out for (if its been sitting for a long time) deuterium exchange can take place. You may end up with some methanol and methanol-d2.
