I am using 3D cohesive elements with continuum formulation to model a single-lap joint in ABAQUS/Explicit. For some reason I get an unrealistic deformed configuration with low stresses in the adhesive (no damage model included, just linear elastic behavior). Any ideas anyone? I guess this is a pretty obvious thing, but I have never worked with cohesive elements before.

I see that you are using a continuum elasticity model in combination with cohesive elements. In general cohesive elements use traction-separation behavior and don't include classical integration. Try using "Traction" response instead. I have tried to upload a modified file, but apparently it is not allowed to upload the file here. drop me an email If you are interested so I can send you the model ([email protected]). I am using Abaqus612 I hope that does not pose any problem. Please note that you need a local material orientation for correct application of traction model and that you need to have an appropriate stacking orientation in the mesh as well. I hope this helps.
