From literature it appears one animal host can be infected with more than one Brucella spp e.g. Cattle may be infected with B. abortus as well as B. melitensis and Sheep can be infected with B. ovis and B.melitensis. However in my own personal experience I have not detected such.
I have read in the literature about 2 biovars of the same Brucella species recovered simultaneously from one animal host. I have never encountered 2 different Brucella species at the same time in one animal.
Dr. Ashraf Sayour, thank you very much for your answer. I found DNA of B. abortus and B. melitensis in clinical samples (organs and serum) collecetd from animals naturally infecetd with brucellosis . Also I detected DNA of 2 different brucella spp in blood and milk of the same animals, but no isoaltion and I am looking for the possible explanation for that issue.
Dr. Gamal, this sounds interesting. Was it AMOS or Bruce-ladder PCR that you used for species identification? Do both abortus and melitensis DNAs belong to field not vaccinal strains? Do the tested animals live in contact with other animal species? The answers to these questions might help. I wish you luck in your work.
Dr. Ahraf, DNA of both B. abortus and B. melitensis were detected by multiples real-time PCR in 7 organs collected from cows suffered from brucellosis and from one serum samples of aborted sheep. The Ct value of all samples were very close to positive control. Unfortunately, amount of DNA was not enough to run AMOS and Ladder PCR. So that I asked if some one isolated 2 spp from the same animals or it may be one vaccinal and one field strain. As I am also found but it is not strange , 2 B. abortus strains were isolated from one animal. One RB51 and B. A. abortus bv1.
I hardly remember a research paper in the late eighties or early nineties by Dr. Samira El-Gibaly, Dr. Mahmoud Hamdy and others about the isolation of Brucella melitensis biovar 3 from cows previously vaccinated with Brucella abortus strain 19. These cows belonged to a farm in Sharkia Governorate. I'll try to find this paper for you as it was published in a local Egyptian journal.
