There's very little published in recent years. I'd be interested to know if anyone's collected S. damnosum s.l. in traps, even if you were trying to catch something else (Tsetse etc.).
The Esperanza window trap, when baited with chemical lures and CO2 can be used to collect epidemiologically significant numbers of Simulium ochraceum s.l., potentially serving as a replacement for human landing collections for evaluation of the transmission of O. volvulus.

Thanks Masoud. I've been doing some work with Esperanza Traps recently and they certainly appear to be useful. There don't appear to be many other published examples of S. damnosum s.l. being trapped in recent times, though.
The Esperanza trap is the latest trap for replacing human baiting. However, I am working on developing a trap using some toxic baits. Are you working on a similar idea? Let me know your research interest Adam. I am interested in onchocerciasis control using interventions targeted at vectors.
I've been using Esperanza traps for blackfly collections in onchocerciasis foci in Uganda and Tanzania. I'm hoping to have the work published soon. I'd certainly be interested to know more about your ideas for toxic baits, so please feel free to send me a message.
We did some work in Cameroon to develp a trap (we called it the 'Magic Flyboy') for catching blood-searching Simulium damnosum. see: http://www.riverblindness.eu/simulium-fly-traps/. This trap worked very well both in the forest (=> S. squamosum) and in the savanna (=> S. damnosum s.s. / S. sirbanum). Catches were as high as by the human fly-collector. It was also extremely specific (> 95 % of catch) in collecting only female S. damnosum flies. The flies are caught in a glass-tube and they remain alive and undamaged, which is a great advantage to any trap, working with a glue.
Disadvantages were the need of electricity and CO2.
