Nowadays, lots of geospatial data is available on the World Wide Web that can be explored, exploited and consumed for free. Is this data accurate enough? Has anyone tested its horizontal/vertical accuracy? These are the questions which might be of interest to many of us.
Freely available GIS dataset (crowd sourced GI) are created by volunteer and thus known as VGI. Quality assessment (accuracy,completeness etc) of crowd sourced GI and VGI is hot topic now a days . Many researchers and angled towards that area. Many research studies are available i.e

In this regards, I would like to show you some of the real examples of accuracy assessment, from the Global land cover data (Gong P et al. (2012) Finer resolution observation and monitoring of global land cover: first mapping results with Landsat TM and ETM+ data International Journal of Remote Sensing 34:2607-2654). We have compare this data with own land cover product and found so many mistakes at number of places. For your ready reference please have a look attachment.
Here, I would like to highlight and appreciate Global studies giving base line which can be downscale or modify according to the real ground realities.
Look at the Geo-Wiki Project (http://www.geo-wiki.org/). They compare different georeferenced products.
