Has anyone been able to wash and resuspend Staph. Aureus (USA300) without significant loss of bacteria?

I am trying to do an infection model of Staph. Aureus pneumonia in mice.

We are having trouble replicating our bacteria counts, when we wash and resuspend our bacteria.

We have washed and resuspended in growth medium (BHI) without bacteria loss, but have issues when we try to wash and resuspend in PBS.

We have tried RPMI with less loss than PBS and NaCl with similar loss to PBS.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to go next?
