I want to suggest that the bioassay to be used to test for the toxicity of the natural product is a determinant. This is because a positive control is know for its role in causing a well known effect via the assessment of biomarkers. Also the type of organism to be used is important, as specific response may be elicited by the test compound on different organisms. therefore it is not compulsory that a natural product will be used as positive control in your study.
