Groundwater irrigation with shallow and deep tube well is widespread in the south-west coastal Bangladesh, which is salinity affected. Farmers have been irrigating dry season rice and non-rice crops with ground water. What will be the consequence of widespread groundwater irrigation in coastal Bangladesh. Is is feasible for sustainable agriculture?
no, it's absolutely not .no sustainability can be achieved .salinity is a big issue for rice. salinity stress is complex because of variation in sensitivity at various stages in the life cycle of plants.
Salt stress not only affects the plant's morphological
attributes but also disturbs the plant's metabolic activities.as well probably there will be a high yield loss. it's better to go for salt-tolerant rice varieties with scientific research and all else better use a proper irrigation system Md Roushon Jamal
Analysis of the water quality will be a key determinant for the choice of irrigation method and longevity.
Salts can be deposited in 3 mediums. From weathering of rocks, evaporation from ocean and deposited as rain and salts left behind as sediments from retreating seas. So using ground water for irrigation will and most likely may cause problem in the long run (crop facing salinity stress). Because they (farmers) are reapplying the same water, every time the water is applied, some of the water will evaporate thus leaving the salts concentrated in the soil. However, very high salt concentrations can result from this multiple cycles of reuse. Therefore I suggest it is better for them (the farmers) to use fresh running water from a water source for irritation purposes.
Continuous use of the water may lead to build of more salt content. And this can affect sustainable production if crops. I will advice you test the salinity levels of the water and soil. The result will definitely help. The use of tolerant varieties is recommended. On my own end we are trying to reduce effects of salinity on crops with application of mycorrhizae and soil amendments.
