Well, if you are coming for grad studies at a good school in US, you should have a sound GRE score apart from all other academic qualifications. I couldn't get the logic behind such importance of this test. It has verbal and quant section. Do you think if somebody scores 165+ out of 170 in quant. section (basically school level math), he/she is well prepared for the level of quantitative analysis required for grad studies? Yes, verbal section reflects your writing skill and vocabulary.
As its name promises, it is a General Record Exam--more or less--and a must-take skills test for grad students!
I have took GRE aptitude and advanced tests in 1979! It was long time ago, and I do not remember dear @Satyabrata. The results were taken into account, along with TOEFL to get good University in USA. Better results mean more choices!

I appreciate your thought. For your kind information, I have a good GRE score too apart from academic excellence for which I've got a call from UC Davis and currently pursuing my PhD. But, I was wondering what's its relevance with your own domain? Like, my background is electronics/electrical engineering. Even if I scored well in GRE, how it's relevant to my technical abilities in Electrical/Electronics domain? This case is more serious when schools discard applications solely based on GRE score, even though the candidate has an excellent academic and research profile.
Since students from different universities from almost all countries of the world are applying to study at good US universities, and these universities have different levels and standards that is not always reflected in the students' manuscript, then there must be a common exam that measures the level of the student and this exam is the GRE. As dear @Ljubomir said: Better results mean more choices!
My elder daughter had to pass twice the GMAT before she could get the score required for the MBA she wanted to enlist, but in the end it demonstrated her commitment to do whatever required to succeed; and I think that it is why these tests are considered important, as beyond the level they might reflect they demonstrate the willingness of the student to work for reaching his/her objectives.

Thank you for your kind information. I am aware of the GMAT test too. I had a dream of pursuing my PhD in a top school in US. Thankfully, I have got selected for University of California, Davis with full scholarship and have started my PhD 3 months back in ECE department. So, I am aware of all such exams and got a good score in GRE too, but I was wondering what's its relevance with my technical capabilities. So, from the above discussions, it can be inferred that though it has nothing to do with my technical knowledge, it's just a reflection of your quantitative and verbal reasoning which helps later in some way or the other.
Great ans Nevrus. I support such decisions. Yes, MIT EECS dept. doesn't ask for GRE score. After all, I got a rejection no, so pretty sure about them. Ha ha.
