More and more journals include an option to submit graphical abstracts these days. It should summarize the presented data in one concise illustration or schematic.
I would like to know what you think of this evolution in scientific publishing. Is visual representation of data becoming more and more important and should it become part of the skill set of a researcher?
I faced this request as well ,very recently.
In my opinion is very good idea. It is like an abstract,
is atractive and shows the aim and conclusion of the research at the same time.
Well i think this is a part of a method, doný represent per se the meaning of a investigation in the other side this kind of abstractions are very "easy" to shown us the time line of anything and provide to us a general idea about the topics in facts. They are usefull.
If you think in neural networks (Kohonen) you might see a way to move on from a static graphics to a self organizated data; i know this is probably an utopian thinking -very far away from science- but i believe it can be a future scene in the information areas, who nows right?

I agree, i think it is a hot topic indeed. I also noticed that outside science, more and more visuals are used to explain difficult matter or to put lots of data in 1 illustration. I'm referring to infographics. They appear more and more now in newspapers and magazines. I think that is similar to your example of these open government data, no?
But, actually i didn't see these kind of infographics a lot in biomedical research fields yet. Only graphical abstracts come close. Is there a reason for this or is it just unexplored territory for research scientists?

It is a natural way and it does not consume lots of energy. But, despite the many advantages, graphical abstracts are not often used because of the simple reason that conveying scientific data in a visual way is not always part of the skill set of a research scientist. For example, for math it doesn’t worth always.
