Goitrogens mainly thiocyanate have very similar binding configuration with Na-I-symporter (NIS) and therefore thyroidal NIS sometimes binds with the available thiocyante in place of iodine provided thiocyanate is present in foods the person consumes.
In addition, thiocyanate also causes excretion of iodine more mimicking a state of adequate iodine nutritional status as evidenced by urinary iodine excretion pattern. However physiologically biochemical and hormonal hypothyroidism persists in those cases.
