Glucose assay standard preparation/getting purple color, what is causing this?

Does anybody have the experience of getting a purple color for standards in Glucose assay? after adding sulphuric acid, the color turns to purple rather than pink. What do you think is causing this purple color? (the Glucose standard and buffers are fine and we have done the standards before).

Sulphuric acid could cause glucose dehydration yielding hydroxymethylfurfural (see Molisch test)
