Hi RG family. I’m trying to get a foothold on qualitative data analysis using Nvivo. First off, I must admit my addiction to quantitative methods through out much of my career. But recently, I’m getting obsessed with qualitative approaches to research, because of their potential to generate more detailed and comprehensive insights.
However, I’m not familiar with the Nvivo software. Please fill me in on any and I mean any detail you know about qualitative data analysis via Nvivo. From transcription, and data entry, to analysis, results visualization and interpretation. I look forward to learning massively from your immensely invaluable contributions to this discussion.

I also like the series of NVivo videos on YouTube by Philip Adu (but personally, I prefer MAXDDA for my own work, just because I find its interface more comfortable).

and probably don't need to point out to you that software packages for both quantitative and qualitative research projects are essentially data management systems for larger projects; for the smaller stuff, just do it 'old school'.
Further to my contribution above, what I mean by 'old school' is that nowadays, even for smaller projects, we'll probably use a bit of IT, but not as far as actually using the fuller data management powers of packages such as SPSS or NVivo.
I think the main reason for not using qualitative data software on small projects is the learning curve involved for those programs. But if you have commitment to learning the software, then the size of the project doesn't matter.
David L Morgan and Philip Adams , thank you all for your invaluable contributions. I appreciate them all. But I’m really interested in using qualitative data mana software like Nvivo because I’m told it can really get the job done for qualitative data from 30 to 50 interviews. It’s a herculean task but worth the while.
Yes, large numbers of interviews are a good reason to use qualitative data analysis software, especially when it comes to searching and retrieving the segments you have marked.

David L Morgan That‘s the point. My proposed dataset is large. So, I’m gonna need qualitative data software. Also, i’m interested in how AI could be used for qualitative data analysis as presented in the article you recommended. I saw what you did with ChatGPT and I was so impressed. But I don’t know if AI-based analysis will be accepted generally in the academic community rather than standard qualitative software like Nvivo. What do you think???
Edim Eka James You raise a very good question about the acceptance of AI-based analysis. Of course, you run a risk anytime you use a truly innovative approach for either gathering or analyzing data. One thing I would point out, however, is that using ChatGPT is much faster than coding your data.
If you new to NVivo etc., it is also important to note that coding is only data management, rather than the actual analysis process. With large data sets, coding does indeed make the data more manageable, but at a heavy cost in terms of the long and tedious process of marking up all that data.
So, there are definite trade-offs.
And of course, as David mentions above, if you want mostly to learn how to use packages such as SPSS or NVivo etc., the size of your project isn't really the issue; although, in this case, I'd personally tend towards the smaller---just for manageability.
