Hi new to STATA and wondering if I could get help answering this question.
I have list that the variables are string called ID that is 7 digits long.

2534683
8523950
1252973
2572958
I want to generate a new list that contains only the ID that the second digit equals to 5
2534683
8523950
2572958
How do I go about doing this? Hopefully this makes sense

One way of doing it is as follows:

input id
1234567

end
tostring id, replace //Making the variable string
split id, parse("5") //Splitting the variables
destring id*, replace //Making all the variables numeric
keep if id1

You can simply enter:
gen id2 = id if strpos(id, "5")==2
If you have strings of different lengths and you ONLY want to keep those with a length of 7 characters, it will be:
gen id2 = id if strpos(id, "5")==2 & length(id)==7
