What solid experimental evidence exists demonstrating that chemotherapy depletes/kills HSCs in treated humans? Is it only indirect by observing cytopenias? Or do HSCs truly die or stop proliferating? Or does chemo inhibit differentiation? From my naivety there could be many plausible reasons for cytopenias? Also of course, there are many different types of chemo. Maybe I'm fishing for comments in relation to 2 types of compounds. 5-fluorouracil or instead thalidomide/lenalidomide.

Opinions are also very welcome in relation to this rather open question.
