I would think that the EU has a number of grant options. But you should consider partnering with a North American colleague, which might give your project access to US funds. The kind of archaeological project you are planning will determine which organizations you can apply to. Have you thought about trying the National Geographic Society? I believe they still fund archaeological projects. 

It rather depends where the research is going to take place and on the scope of that same research. Could you be more specific, Antonio?
