here FESEM image shows fabulous orientation of standing silicon nanowires (Candlestick) or nanocake ....
The small wires surrounding the sticks are also silicon nanowires
I prefer honey-combed anodic porous alumina :-) However, I obtained some very weird shapes while I was doing first electrochemical deposition of Ni into AAO :-)

Haw we synthesized nano cakes?
heat up silicon wafer coverd with gold layer by controling the temprature and deposition time without the use of AAO or silane gas.
Then take it from the cooking oven and eat it without fork and nife... very small but sweety.

A nanocrystalline material originally created 100s of years ago
it is an important structure for nanoelectronics to have highly conductive Au beads inside semiconductor Si nano-wire and at the same time Au available at top and bottom of the wire grown by CVD process under VLS mechanism.
some times amazing results comes from simple methods or direct processes. This is the beauty of Nanotechnology.
