What is the shape of foundation in plan? If irregular shapes are there, triangular elements would be better. If it is simple rectangular shape, better opt for quadrilateral or brick elements.
If shape of the section is circular then you have to use curved or isoparametric element. You can't use straight edged element to simulate the circular section. You have to use quadrilateral element or hexahedral element to simulate the circular section. The FEM results vary depends on shape of the element and also the number node used to define the element. If you use more number of node to define the geometry then the expected variation of stress will be better. I request you to see ABAQUS manual to get still better understanding on what i explained to you. all the best in your work..
