There is already more plastic than fish in oceans, Fukushima is also still there, industrial and domestic dumping too, so how safe is eating fish ? Does it make a difference if its on regular basis or not ?
Fishes grown with prepared feed and different medicines in waste water or other surface water are perhaps contain far more harmful materials than those of ocean. Ocean is vast and still less polluted than stagnant surface water.
I have no precise information or data on this subject. However, I share the opinion of Shibabrata. As far as farmed fish is concerned, my opinion is that this activity is not sufficiently regulated from the point of view of food security, not only in developing countries but also in the most industrialized countries. With the "mad cow" scandal of 1997, the breeding of animals for slaughter it is strictly regulated. Each garment destined for slaughtering, in the most advanced countries, is monitored from birth both from the point of view of animal nutrition and animal health and animal welfare in terms of the quality of life of the animal. The same thing is not done for farmed fish.
Dear Leonardo, thank you for your clear answer. In conclusion the situation in the most advanced countries is theoretically Ok vis a vis the regulations every country or groupe of countries are implementing. I'm afraid this is unfortunately not enough. Given the diversity and different degrees of permissiveness or appreciation of potential health hazards as far as regulations concerning animals fead by hormones or pesticide affected nutrients. Hebicides, pesticides, are slso a serious hazard also for all kinds of fish and sea food..
No, maybe my answer has not been completely clear, I will try to clarify it better. With regard to the rearing of cattle, pigs, sheep and poultry for human food consumption, EU legislation is sufficiently restrictive and the controls are sufficiently effective. Unfortunately, there is no legislation and controls in the EU comparable to the aforementioned for what concerns farmed fish. In other words, while it is not possible to find traces of hormones as it is no longer allowed to use for the aforementioned animals and because the controls are very stringent. In the case of farmed fish the controls are rather bland. In any case, traces of herbicides and nicotinoids are not rare both in the meat of animals for slaughter and in those of farmed fish, moreover traces of microplastic are in some cases find in the fishable wild resources.
There is somebody that can supply graphics/statistics about the amount of antibiotic and hormones per metric ton produced in fish farming, compared with the used in, for example, poultry, pigs and rabbits?
After one year, nobody is able to supply the figures I asked for.
My conclusion is clear: the use of antibiotics and hormones in fish farming is much, much, much lower that in other animal productions. So, my question is... Why and Who is interested in to attack the fish farming?
