For calculating form factor in an electroslag welding process how width and depth are practically measured?

Form factor = width of the molten metal/depth of the molten metal

& higher form factor gives good resistance from cracking.

But how the width & depth are measured in practise?

width of the molten metal= root opening plus the total penetration into the base metal.

Depth is the distance from the top of the molten weld pool to the lowest level of the liquid-solid interface.This you can measure by the rate of metal deposition and welding traverse speed. From this you will get the volume of molten metal. You know root cross-section. So, you can calculate the depth.
