I am currently working on a research survey regarding Ulva Species intake of Heavy metals. Is there any way to detect Heavy Metals within the plant tissue via Colorimetry techniques? I know the Atomic Absorption Spectrometer is the conventional method but we were looking for alternative means of detection. (Plus this method is quite expensive)
Colorimetry is possible but generally neither specific nor sensitive enough.
AAS or ICP will be more expensive, but if you just produce mainly/only inaccurate or unreliable data by using colorimetry, than all the effort and time spent on doing the work is useless/wasted. Thus consider carefully the pros and cons before choosing any method.

I agree with C.A. Kan, for the heavy metals AAS and ICP is best, but of cause expansive. Calorimetry could be useful for macronutrients (Fe, Ca, Mg, Na etc.) but not for heavy metals because HMs already present in trace amounts in organisms.
