How do I find the right PhD?
I'm going crazy about finding a PhD where I can combine the study of marine viruses and their effects on ocean environments (biological pump and biogeochemistry). If this is even possible.
I've always thought interesting the possibility of studying the evolution of marine viruses (especially the ones infecting Archaea) and use them to help in the study of Earth history and to better understand the beginning and the evolution of life
in my suggestion, for all graduate studies, specifically Ph.D. and PDF positions, you are doing something multidisciplinary and you probably can't find the exact suitable position for yourself. But rather try to find the most suitable position which would be close to your research interest and then develop your own research fields.
This was especially true in my case. For example, I got my master's in environmental engineering with a focus on air pollution. However, for my Ph.D., I generally used my skills as an environmental engineer and I applied my skills in a broader area (Environmental anomalies). I learned more about remote sensing applications in my master's and different satellite functions on detecting and assessing different phenomena. Therefore, I wrote 7 proposals about remote sensing applications on the environment in different research interests. I got my admission from UofRegina, and now I am again applying remote sensing applications on solid waste management.
Back to your question, try to be broader and apply your skills in broader research interest. Once you got a position, you can develop your passions within that position. Supervisors are mostly ok with what a student decided to do.
