My goal is to insert a catheter into the femoral artery (Wistar rat) and then register the blood pressure during physical training on a treadmill. I attempted to cannulate it and it was fine, I got a signal, the animal woke up, but I lost his leg (it was purple). It looks like other people are able to do this catheterization and the animal do not loose his limb, and can freely move using the two back limbs after the surgery. They argue that the rat has other collateral vascularization that would supply limb blood flow, but I am not sure about it. Can anybody give me tips about this procedure?

I think this may have something to do with the level where you do the catheterization. The lower the spot you choose for ligation, the more possibility that there would be collaterals coming off before your ligature which may compensate. Also, individual animal vascular anatomy variation can affect the outcome. Here is a good article with nice vascular anatomy pictures:

I have been using the Jove demo video as well, but still have a problem with choosing the right size catheter, I could not find information on animal's weight or age they have been usin for that type of catheter.
